The end of the world

IMG_0591Hello from Ushuaia, called “el fin del mundo” or the end of the world because it is the southernmost city in the world- allegedly. Note that the southernmost bar in the world is not here. It is in a Ukrainian research station on Antarctica.  So next trip for that one.

The tango show in BA was great! We went to Pizarolla and did the show (not the dinner) and the live music and dancers were excellent.  The last day in BA we walked to Recoleta Cemetery (really awesome cemetery- a must do if you visit BA) then stopped at Bullers brewery so I could try their IPA, then went to the estuary by the water in BA Puerto Madera and saw herons, parrots and other birds. For dinner we had Peruvian food a restaurant called Status that had excellent ceviche and rice with seafood for the most reasonable prices we found in BA.

On to Ushuaia! We flew down Sunday morning and spent the afternoon wandering the town and booking our Beagle Channel cruise. We wanted to do a longer boat ride to see penguins and after talking to 8 or so companies decided to splurge a bit ($12 more each) to go on the sailing trip. Excellent decision.

IMG_0574At 8 am the 7 of us on the boat (max capacity is 8) took an hour drive to the bay. There we boarded the boat 2×2 in a zodiac and set sail. It was awesome! There was an orca that breached right as we entered the channel but only a couple of people on the boat saw it (not us alas). We sailed along the dividing line between Argentina and Chile and seabirds and penguins kept us company on our way to the penguin island. Once there we saw hundreds of penguins and their nests and young at the first stop. Then we went around the island to see even more and got right up to the beach on the boat. There are three kinds of penguins that come to the island each year!

After penguin island we sailed to see the cormorants (birds) and then to another island that sometimes has sea lions but not that day. The scenery the whole time was incredible, our companions on the boat were great (one was from Stanley, ID), the guide and captain were super informative- great day trip.

In the interest of keeping the posts readable I will save the rest of Ushuaia for the next post. Keep the comments coming and let me know if there are specific thungs you want us (Rich will post too) to tell you about. We take requests!
